Karina Brown

Founder and Executive Director of Equitrial and Coach

Meet our Directors

Karina Brown is a rising junior at Dreyfoos School of the Arts. She is co-founder of her schools Mock Trial team, and she is a congressional debater on the national circuit she has made finals at various prestigious tournaments including the Sunvitational, Florida Blue Key and their Round Robin, Katy Taylor TFA, and multiple Digital Tournament of champions and she is a national quarterfinalist. She has made regionals with her mock trial team, and she has experience in world schools’ debate. She started Mock Trial with her Co-President Gavin Murray after attending a 10-day intensive in Texas to learn everything about the confusing event. She noticed that it is very unfair for schools to be expected to qualify for their state competition when locals are not even on the table, and considering there is only one open spot to go to state it becomes difficult for smaller schools, or schools with limited resources to excel in Mock Trial. Equitrial strives to level the playing field where justice finds its balance between practice and passion so that competition can become more accessible for everyone.

Jake Zeng

Case Director

Jake Zeng is a junior at American Heritage Broward in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He has competed in Mock Trial since he was in 7th grade as both a witness and a lawyer. He is the reigning Florida Mock Trial state champion, having also ranked individually as the second-best witness in the competition. As a lawyer, Jake ranked 3rd as a team at Florida State University’s Sunshine State Showdown, and 4th at the Colorado Providence Cup, where he also ranked in the top 10 individually. Outside of Mock Trial, Jake competes in Moot Court, in which he is also Florida’s reigning state champion. He also has competed in debate for 7 years, ranking in the top 32 teams nationally two years in a row. Jake is incredibly passionate about spreading knowledge about the law, given its complexity, to the average person. He believes competing in legal competitions like Moot Court and especially Mock Trial has the potential to educate every new generation on how they can navigate the seemingly unapproachable field of the law.
